Introducing the “Giant Leopard Moth”, found across eastern North America and even as far south as Colombia. It is a large white moth with dark spots, some of which shine an iridescent blue. The caterpillar, referred to as a ‘woolly bear’ hibernates over winter and then creates its cocoon in the spring.

The painting on this was my first attempt at starting with a dark background. The idea was that I wanted the moth to ‘pop’. With it being a pale coloured subject,  a white background would just not do it justice. Overall it was an enjoyable challenge and one I’d gladly try again. It may be subtle but I painted the background to show a hint of a light source. This actually has inspired me to paint backgrounds on my other pieces, which I previously hadn’t tried for this collection.
