The blue duck confines itself to the high altitude, fast flowing, clear rivers of the mountain regions of both the North & South Islands. They can not survive in water that is polluted. They usually live in territorial pairs along the river, and once a territory is claimed it is theirs for life.
The Whio also appears on the $10 note in NZ.
